North Window
Use of colour is an outstanding feature of Douglas Strachan’s work. This most prolific of Scottish stained glass artists of the 20th century completed a number of small commissions for St Giles’, but all are dwarfed beside his magnificent north window. This window portrays nautical themes: Christ walking on the water in the lower section and, in the upper section, Christ stilling the tempest. Strachan has made his subject come alive through the exciting, swirling shapes of his glass pieces, and the tremendous richness of the blues, greens and purples that predominate.
