Introit

Let thy merciful ears O Lord

Let thy merciful ears, O Lord,
be open to the prayers of thy humble servants;
and that they may obtain their petitions,
make them to ask such things as shall please thee;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Music: Thomas Mudd c1560-c1632

Processional Hymn

Make me a captive, Lord,
and then I shall be free:
force me to render up my sword,
and I shall conqueror be.
I sink in life's alarms
when by myself I stand;
imprison me within thine arms,
and strong shall be my hand.

My heart is weak and poor
until it master find;
it has no spring of action sure-
it varies with the wind.
It cannot freely move,
till thou hast wrought its chain;
enslave it with thy matchless love,
and deathless it shall reign.

My power is faint and low
till I have learned to serve;
it wants the needed fire to glow,
it wants the breeze to nerve;
it cannot drive the world,
until itself be driven;
its flag can only be unfurled
when thou shalt breathe from heaven.

My will is not my own
till thou hast made it thine;
if it would reach a monarch's throne
it must its crown resign;
it only stands unbent,
amid the clashing strife,
when on thy bosom it has leant
and found in thee its life.

Invitation

Confession

God of silence and storm, the waves of inhumanity swamp us; the frenzy of false information threatens to overwhelm us; we search around and see only chaos. Forgive us the fear which makes us cling to our prejudices and misconceptions; the panic which puts our faith in false prophets; the terror which assumes that wealth is a safe harbour. Have mercy on us and reach out your hand of forgiving love and pull us from the depths of despair. Keep us afloat with hearts full of hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Declaration of Forgiveness

Gloria Patri sung by the choir (Tone vi)

First Lesson    1 Kings 19 9-18

Metrical Psalm

Give thanks to God, call on his name;
to men his deeds make known.
Sing ye to him, sing psalms; proclaim
his wondrous works each one.
See that ye in his holy name
to glory do accord;
and let the heart of ev’ry one
rejoice that seeks the Lord.

Give thanks to God, call on his name;
to men his deeds make known.
Sing ye to him, sing psalms; proclaim
his wondrous works each one.
See that ye in his holy name
to glory do accord;
and let the heart of ev’ry one
rejoice that seeks the Lord.

The Gospel   St Matthew 14 22-33

The Sermon

The Apostles' Creed

We believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth:
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried:
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
Sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit;
The Holy Catholic Church;
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting. Amen

The Offering

Intercessions

Gloria in Excelsis sung by the choir

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you
And also with you
Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give our thanks and praise

Prayer

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of Hosts,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Glory be to you, O Lord Most High.
Blessed is he that comes in the Name of the Lord:
Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Have mercy upon us.
Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,
Grant us your peace.

Holy Communion

During Communion the Choir sings

Dixit Maria
Mary said to the Angel:
Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord,
let it be done to me, according to your word.

Text: St Luke 1 38
Music: Hans Leo Hassler 1564-1612

Prayer

Hymn

Come, living God, when least expected,
When minds are dull and hearts are cold,
Through sharpening word and warm affection
Revealing truths as yet untold.

Break from the tomb in which we hide you
To speak again in startling ways;
Break through the words in which we bind you
To resurrect our lifeless praise.

Come now, as once you came to Moses
Within the bush alive with flame,
Or to Elijah on the mountain,
By silence pressing home your claim.

So, let our minds be sharp to read you
In sight or sound or printed page,
And let us greet you in our neighbours,
In ardent youth or mellow age.

Then, through our gloom, your Son will meet us
As vivid truth and living Lord,
Exploding doubt and disillusion
To scatter hope and joy abroad.

Then we will share his radiant brightness
And, blazing through the dread of night,
Illuminate by love and reason,
For those in darkness, faith's delight.
