Processional Hymn

Hail thee, Festival Day!
blest day that art hallowed for ever;
day when the Lord from heaven
shone on the world with his grace.

Lo! in the likeness of fire,
on them that await his appearing,
he whom the Lord foretold
suddenly, swiftly, descends.

Forth from the Father he comes
with his sevenfold mystical dowry,
pouring on human souls
infinite richness of God.

Hark! in a hundred tongues
Christ's own, his chosen apostles,
preach to a hundred tribes
Christ and his wonderful works.

Praise to the spirit of life,

all praise to the fount of our being,
light that now lightens all,
life that in all now abides.

Invitation

Confession

Holy God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples, creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the Good News of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with flames of desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Metrical Psalm

Thy quick'ning spirit thou send'st forth,

then they created be;
and then the earth's decayed face
renewed is by thee.

The glory of the mighty Lord
continue shall for ever:
the Lord Jehovah shall rejoice
in all his works together.

Earth, as affrighted, trembleth all,
if he on it but look;
and if the mountains he but touch,
they presently do smoke.

I will sing to the Lord most high,
so long as I shall live;
and while I being have I shall
to my God praises give.

The Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth:

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

Born of the Virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, dead, and buried:

He descended into hell;

The third day he rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,

And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost;

The Holy Catholic Church;

The Communion of Saints;

The Forgiveness of sins;

The Resurrection of the body,

And the Life everlasting.

The Offering

The Intercessions

Gloria in Excelsis sung by the choir

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, goodwill towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.  Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer.  Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Messe Solennelle Louis Vierne

Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,

Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,

Have mercy upon us.

Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world,

Grant us your peace.

Prayer

Hymn

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
hidden now in mystery;
nature bursts with joyful promise,
ripe with what is yet to be.
In a wealth of rich invention,
still God’s work of art unfolds;
barely have we seen, and faintly,
what God’s great salvation holds.

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
making Jesus seen and heard.
Every age of God’s creation
grasps new meaning from the Word.

Show us, Holy Spirit, show us
your new work begun today;
eyes and ears and hearts are open,
teach us what to do and say.

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
all God’s children brought to birth;

Freed from hunger, fear and evil
every corner of the earth;
and a million, million voices
speak with joy the Saviour’s name;
every face reflects his image,
never any two the same.

Great and deep the Spirit’s purpose,
nothing shall be left to chance;
all that lives will be united
in the everlasting dance;
all fulfilled and all perfected,
each uniquely loved and known;
Christ in glory unimagined
once for all receives his own.
